Are You Ready For A Game of Thrones?

Game of Thrones notebooks

Game of Thrones has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon with the HBO television series gripping viewers each year. To celebrate the popularity of this fantasy series, Moleskine has released a limited edition series of notebooks featuring covers depicting various houses from the world of Game of Thrones.

The world of Game of Thrones was originally found in the novel series A Song of Ice And Fire by George R.R. Martin, first published in 1996. The show gets its name from the first novel in the series, A Game of Thrones. The screen adaptation hit television screens around the world in 2011 and has recently finished its sixth season.

We have the full range of Game of Thrones Moleskine notebooks available on OPInfo and to celebrate this we thought we’d take a closer look at this fascinating world.

The World of Game of Thrones

Both the show and the book series are famed for their incredibly in depth world building including vast histories, multiple scenes on at least two continents and the wealth of characters that inhabit the world. The main stories of Game of Thrones take place on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos.

Three main stories occur in Game of Thrones and continue throughout the seasons and books.  The first storyline is the fight for the Iron Throne that occurs after the current king, King Robert Baratheon, dies and three men, Robert’s son Joffrey and his two brothers Renly and Stannis Baratheon, step forward to challenge for the throne.

Robb Stark fights for the independence of the North as King in the North and Balon Greyjoy seeks to become King of the Iron Islands. This forms the Battle of the Five Kings and sees the entirety of Westeros thrown into battle.

Another story is the Night’s Watch and their efforts to guard the Wall against the Wildlings, people who live beyond the Wall, and the supernatural threat of the White Walkers. The Wall is a 700 foot tall and 300 mile wide stone and ice construct that separate the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros from Beyond the Wall.

The final story is the struggle of Daenerys Targaryen and her attempts to raise an army to retake the Iron Throne. She is the daughter of Mad King Aerys II, whom Robert Baratheon rebelled against years before, who was exiled to Essos with her brother, Viserys, after the death of her father.

A Noble Set Of Notebooks

The limited edition Moleskine notebooks have been designed around the three main Houses of Game of Thrones. These are House Stark of the North, House Lannister of the West and House Targaryen, who were originally the royal family in Westeros. Along with this, there is a final notebook that features Jon Snow in the colours of the Nights Watch. Each notebook is in the colours of the House and features their House animal as well.

House LannisterHouse Lannister

This Moleskine notebook in rich red and gold and features their House animal, the lion as a backdrop with the silhouette of a Lannister member. They are currently known as the Royal House as well as Wardens of the West.

The Lannister’s words relate directly to their animal with ‘Hear Me Roar’ being their official words, though it is more common in Game of Thrones to hear their unofficial words ‘A Lannister Always Pays His Debts’.

House StarkHouse Stark

The grey and white background of the House Stark Moleskine notebook features the Stark animal, a direwolf. This is a larger version of a wolf and is normally found beyond the Wall. Their House words are ‘Winter Is Coming’, one of the few House words that always comes true eventually.

The Starks are the Wardens of the North and have inhabited the North for over 8,000 years. Winterfell, the seat of House Stark, has existed for over 1,000 years.

House TargaryenHouse Targaryen

The Targaryens originally hailed from the Valyrian Freehold in Essos, but 300 years ago they took over the continent of Westeros and created the Seven Kingdoms. Their house animal is a dragon as they brought their dragons over with them from Valyria.

The House words of the Targaryens are ‘Fire and Blood’ and their colours are red and black, as seen in this Moleskine notebook. The only Targaryens are currently in Essos in exile due to the death of their family.

Jon Snow/Night's WatchJon Snow/Night’s Watch

The Night’s Watch has existed for 8,000 years and has protected the Realm of Men from the dangers beyond the Wall. They guard the wall from people who live beyond it, Wildlings, along with White Walkers, an unnatural threat.

Jon Snow is the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark, the head of House Stark and the Lord of Winterfell. He joins the Night’s Watch and takes the oath to serve them, pledging his loyalty to the Watch. The colour of the Night’s Watch is black, giving them the nickname of Crows beyond the Wall. This Moleskine notebook features the Night’s Watch black along with the outline of Jon Snow’s direwolf, Ghost.
