The Hershey Company has begun the construction of a new £60 million Kit Kat production line at its manufacturing plant in Hazelton, Pennsylvania.

Open Ceremony

The chocolate-covered wafer bar is loved all around the globe, and Hershey says the project will boost US sales of the growing Kit Kat line to become the company’s next billion dollar brand.

Todd Tillemans, the President of Hershey’s US business, was joined with other Hershey executives and state politicians in an open ceremony on Friday 9th March. Guests of the event wore hard hats in Kit Kat red to pay homage to the chocolate bar at the manufacturing plant located in the Humboldt Industrial Park.

The Hershey factory in Hazelton, which is responsible for producing Cadbury, Camarello and Kit Kat products, produces around 240,000 Kit Kats per day. The new assembly line, which is expected to be in operation by December, will make an additional 150,000 bars per day and create 111 new jobs – a 25% increase on current employment at the factory. The new vacancies are expected to pay a fair wage of between $17 and $22 per hour including bonuses. Positions will include production operators, HVAC specialists, maintenance mechanics and control specialists.

The Kit Kat Brand

Acquired by Nestlé in 1988, the Kit Kat brand was originally created by Rowntree’s of York in 1935. In the 1970s, Rowntree’s gave production licences to the multi-billion dollar Hershey Company to begin distributing bars to all parts of the US.

Now, coming in over 350 flavours from strawberry cheesecake to cookie dough, the chocolate bar is a favourite amongst chocolate lovers around the world. In Japan, variations are at their wackiest with more than 300 limited-edition seasonal and regional flavours including soy sauce, wasabi, and green tea. However, the US variations are slightly more ‘tame’ featuring flavours of red velvet and mint.

But, who knows? With the new manufacturing capacity at the Hershey plant in Pennsylvania, the US might see an American version of the green tea Kit Kat soon.
